Will bleaching whiten everything?

Some discoloration cannot be corrected with whitening. Bleaching doesn’t work on filling materials and crowns, so your smile might not be helped if you have these kinds of restorations. On the other hand though, as the natural teeth whiten it may improve the how some existing restorations blend in with the rest of your teeth. In situations where whitening may not be a good option, you can also look into alternative options, like porcelain veneers, composite veneers, or crowns. Check out some of Dr. Petersen’s past cases in the photo gallery to get some ideas of how to improve your smile.

Is Bleaching my teeth harmful?

Whitening products contain peroxide(s), which work to remove internal staining and whiten the natural tooth structures. These products typically rely on a percent of carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide as the bleaching agent. This can cause tooth sensitivity which is a normal side effect of bleaching but it does not cause permanent damage to the tooth.

Whitening solutions come in gel form to keep it in on the tooth surface and avoid having it all wash away. The whitening gel is typically applied first to a mouthguard, tray or on a plastic strip. These are then placed in the mouth for 30-60 minutes. Some low concentration gels can be used overnight.  Usage regimens vary based on patient needs and the whitening system used.

How should I choose a whitening product?

All of the whitening products offered at Tyson Petersen DDS are designed for “at-home” use. The differences between whitening products are the method of delivery/application and the strength of whitening agent/gel.

When selecting a whitener or any dental product, be sure to think of what your desired results and expectations will be. Time frame for wanting to get your whitening done is a big factor and may take more than one round of bleaching to get your desired result.

Toothpastes

All toothpastes help remove surface stains through the action of mild abrasives. “Whitening” toothpastes have special chemical or polishing agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness. Whitening toothpastes take longer than bleaching to whiten teeth and may not give you the same results that you would see with a single round of bleaching. Dr. Petersen says if you want noticeable results, that doing a round of actual whitening will make you much happier than waiting for your toothpaste to do the job.
